Countries

Where the sample oils say they are from. The geography is real. The bottles attached to it are not.

Australia
Australian groves are young by Mediterranean standards. Victoria and the other southern states mill European cultivars, often Frantoio and the Spanish varieties, under a strict domestic standard.
Croatia
Croatia’s coast and islands, especially Istria and Kvarner, press a small but distinctive extra virgin crop. Oblica, Istarska bjelica, and Levantinka are the cultivars readers meet most often.
Greece
Greece consumes a large share of its own crop. Crete’s Koroneiki and the Peloponnese’s Athinolia are the styles most likely to travel.
Italy
Italy’s reputation rests on regional styles more than on volume: Tuscan Frantoio is a different oil from Puglian Coratina, and the competitions treat them that way.
Portugal
Portugal’s modern groves are concentrated in Alentejo, where Cobrançosa and imported Spanish cultivars share the mills.
Spain
Spain is the world’s largest olive-oil producer. Jaén and the denominations around Córdoba, including Baena, are the heart of Picual and Hojiblanca.
Tunisia
Tunisia is one of the largest exporters of olive oil outside the European Union. Chemlali from the Sahel around Sfax is the country’s defining cultivar.
United States
California is the only American state with a serious extra virgin industry. Most of the acreage is super-high-density Arbequina, Arbosana, and Koroneiki.
